Record a single note melody line from your Song Writing – Lyrics and Melody Lines lesson.
Play it back and try playing some chords. See which ones fit. Try a chord with the lowest note, or the highest note of the chord the same as the first note of each measure of the melody line. Add a basic rhythm and write down your additions on your staff paper.
You may need a DAW for this next part. There are several excellent free ones available. See the Recording Practice section of the Guitar Gear/Practice Aids page.
Listen to your track through headphones, while recording the new chords onto a separate track.
Congratulations, you’re on your way to making your first hit song!
