Have you ever wondered: “How did I play that?” That’s the problem the Ear Training exercises should help you solve.

Go back and transcribe some of your own recordings, then start transcribing easy songs. Easy is the key here. Until you get some practice and develop your ear, picking apart complex arrangements may just end in frustration.

Melody Line
  • Listen for the Melody. Listen until you can sing it.
  • Now, with Guitar in hand, try to play it.
  • Write down on staff, tab, chord paper what you’re playing with the correct rhythm.
Bass Line
  • Is there a bass line?
  • Listen carefully until you can play along.
  • Write down on staff, tab, chord paper what you’re playing with the correct rhythm.
Harmony / Chords
  • Listen for the chord changes. Are they Major or minor?
  • Listen carefully until you can play along.
  • Write down on staff, tab, chord paper what you’re playing with the correct rhythm.

The more you transcribe, the easier it will be to write down the ideas that come into your head.
